Sheepadoodle pros and cons

Sheepadoodles are loved for their looks and personality, but they are a high-maintenance dog. Here is a balanced view before you commit.

Pros

Affectionate, people-oriented temperament. Most Sheepadoodles want to be with their family.

Smart and trainable. Poodle intelligence makes learning cues and tricks fun.

A coat that can shed less than many breeds. Curlier coats tend to shed less, though it varies by dog and no dog is truly hypoallergenic.

Size choices. Standard and Mini versions suit different homes.

Playful and adaptable, with energy for hiking, swimming and family activities.

Cons

Grooming is a real commitment. Brush several times a week and book a professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks. Mats form quickly and can become painful.

Exercise needs. Under-exercised Sheepadoodles can become destructive.

Cost. Purchase prices, grooming, quality food and veterinary care add up, and prices vary a lot by region and breeder.

Unpredictability. Size, coat and shedding differ within a litter because there is no breed standard.

Separation sensitivity. They do not like long stretches alone.

Possible inherited health problems from both parent breeds (see the health guide).

Who is a good fit

Active owners who enjoy daily walks, can afford regular grooming, and are home often. If you want a low-maintenance, low-cost dog, a Sheepadoodle is probably the wrong choice.
