Sheepadoodle nutrition and longevity
Good nutrition protects joints, weight and energy. These are general guidelines to discuss with your veterinarian, not a prescription.
Feeding a growing puppy
Large and giant breed puppies do best on diets formulated for controlled growth, since overly fast growth can stress developing joints. Look for a statement on the label that the food meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for growth or for all life stages, and ask your vet about large-breed puppy formulas for Standard Sheepadoodles.
Keep them lean
Excess weight is one of the most common and preventable health problems in dogs. You should be able to feel the ribs under a light covering of flesh and see a waist from above. Your veterinarian can score your dog's body condition and set a daily calorie target.
Meals and bloat
Deep-chested dogs can be at risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus, or bloat. Many vets suggest splitting daily food into two or more meals and avoiding vigorous exercise right after eating. Know the signs: a swollen belly, unproductive retching and restlessness, and seek emergency care immediately.
Longevity habits
- Regular veterinary visits and parasite prevention.
- Daily exercise and mental work.
- Dental care and brushing.
- Maintaining a healthy weight throughout life.
Typical lifespan
Many Sheepadoodles live about 12 to 15 years, but there are few large studies of the cross, so treat it as an estimate.
