Sheepadoodle health
Mixed-breed dogs are not automatically healthier than purebreds. A Sheepadoodle can inherit conditions from either parent breed, which is why parent health testing matters. This is general information, not veterinary advice.
Conditions to know about
Hip dysplasia and other joint problems, seen in both Poodles and Old English Sheepdogs.
Eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts.
Von Willebrand disease, a bleeding disorder reported in Poodles; DNA tests exist.
Hypothyroidism and Addison disease, which are seen in Poodles.
Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), a life-threatening emergency in deep-chested dogs. Learn the signs: a swollen abdomen, unproductive retching and restlessness.
Hearing loss, reported in some Old English Sheepdogs and in dogs with predominantly white coats.
Ear infections, because hair grows inside the ear canal and curly coats trap moisture.
Skin problems that develop under matted hair.
Screening to request
Ask breeders for hip and elbow evaluations, an eye exam by a veterinary ophthalmologist, and relevant DNA panels for both parents. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals publishes screening results and standards.
Lifespan
Many Sheepadoodles are reported to live about 12 to 15 years, but there are few large studies of the cross, so treat it as an estimate.
Everyday prevention
Keep up with veterinary visits, parasite control and dental care, keep your dog lean, brush out mats, clean and dry the ears, and feed meals in smaller portions rather than one large meal, as your vet advises.
