Shaved Sheepadoodle coat care
Many owners ask whether to shave a Sheepadoodle for summer or after matting. A very short clip is possible, but a few precautions protect the skin and the coat.
Is it okay to shave a Sheepadoodle?
A short clip is safe for most dogs when done by a skilled groomer, and it is sometimes necessary to remove severe mats. A shave to bare skin is rarely the best choice for routine summer cooling. A coat also insulates against heat and sun, so many groomers suggest a short clip of an inch or so instead of skin-close.
Risks of a very close shave
- Sunburn on exposed skin, especially on pink or lightly pigmented areas.
- Razor irritation and clipper burn on sensitive skin.
- Slow or uneven regrowth, and sometimes a change in coat texture or color.
- Dryness and itch as the coat grows back.
When shaving is the right call
Dense mats pressed against the skin cannot be combed out without pain. A professional shave-down is kinder than hours of brushing, and the coat grows back. Prevent repeat mats with a regular brushing routine.
Caring for a shaved coat
- Limit midday sun and ask your vet about sun protection for your dog.
- Moisturizing dog-safe shampoo; avoid human products.
- Begin brushing again once the coat has regrown to about an inch.
- Book regular grooms so you do not have to shave again.
